The Barns at Redcoats, Hitchin, Hertfordshire
The project was to fully restore the 18th Century barns across the courtyard from The Farmhouse at Redcoats. MJD were contracted by Anglian Country Inns & N & P to provide air conditioning and heating to 15 country style bedrooms, the lobby area and underfloor heating to the main function hall , cowshed bar and lounge areas.
Bedrooms & Lobby Areas
The bedrooms heating and cooling systems were provided by Mitsubishi’s latest Hybrid VRF Heat Recovery Technology (HVRF). The Hybrid VRF is a two pipe heat recovery system with water between the Hybrid Branch Controller (HBC) and all indoor bedroom units. This has provided the barns with a complete modern solution for their heating and cooling requirements. The system meets all future requirements with reduced refrigerant volume enabling compliance with F -Gas targets, with no refrigerant within the occupied areas (http://www.refcom.org.uk). The system provides high levels of comfort with quiet slimline ducted units installed within the bedroom bulkheads. The air is diffused from the bedroom systems via a slimline linear grille, providing optimum comfort to the room occupants. Each room has its own individual controller for fan speed and temperature adjustment, providing a comfortable all year round environment. The system also has an AE-200 centralised controller which enables the management team to monitor the room temperatures and manage the settings if the rooms are unoccupied.
Main function Hall, Cowshed Bar & Lounges
These areas were supplied by Mitsubishi Ecodan Monobloc standalone air source heat pumps. Two systems were used to provide heating to the above areas. The units are self-contained and only require water and electrical connections by the onsite engineers. The Ecodan systems were connected to an underfloor heating system providing 4 controlled zones. Each zone was supplied with a room sensor for tight temperature control. The Ecodan will provide heating down to temperatures as low as -25 °C. Other benefits include the following:
- No need for gas supplies, flues or ventilation
- Low maintenance and quiet in operation
- Energy monitoring function as standard
Following the completion of the project the system was commissioned by Mitsubishi Electric UK, which enabled MJD to offer a seven years parts and labour warranty on the entire installation. A six monthly service contract is now in place.
